Carbon Credits

An earlier post mentions carbon credits. I’d like to dive a bit deeper.

The basic idea is to buy “credits” to offset carbon dioxide emissions. As part of my new “bike green” initiative, I plan to buy carbon credits to offset the carbon footprint of my riding – and general everyday life.

I know what you’re thinking:

“Carbon credits don’t entitle complacency in reducing your carbon footprint. It doesn’t grant a kitchen pass for driving your Jeep to and from the trailhead when you could be riding your bike round trip.”

I realize that. Carbon credits are instant gratification to start the journey. Minimizing my personal carbon footprint is a work in progress.

I’m still in the research phase of buying carbon credits. It’s basically a donation for companies to invest in renewable energy, reforestation and other green activities. I want to find the best carbon credit company to ensure my money is well spent.

A quick trip to Google identified four potential candidates:

I’m not entirely comfortable with TerraPass being a for-profit organization. It’s an immediate strike. However, it’s still anyone’s game since I’m new at carbon credits and completely clueless.

More research is in store over the next few days. In the meantime, I open the question to you. Does anyone have experience with carbon credits or any of these specific companies?
